Glaucoma

A disease of the optic nerve which results from thinning of the nerve cells which transmits information from the eye to the brain, often with no warning or symptoms.

Many patients that have glaucoma are unaware that they have the condition. It is often without symptoms until there is considerable vision loss.

With modern technology, glaucoma may be diagnosed before there is significant visual loss. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scanning can reveal the early stages of glaucoma. It is a painless & quick examination which detects early damage to the nerve cells in the retina before there is damage to your vision.

If undiagnosed and untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness.

Most cases of glaucoma are managed with the use of eye drops. Some may also benefit from soft laser treatments. These treatments are effective in preserving your vision.

In any case, a regular comprehensive eye examination will determine if you have glaucoma or not.
